If RCS messaging isn’t working on your iPhone after the iOS 18 update that added support for the standard, the first step is to confirm that you and your recipient are both using compatible services. RCS (Rich Communication Services) on iPhone works only when you are messaging someone who also has RCS enabled on their device. The other person does not need to be using an iPhone; they may be using an Android phone that supports RCS. However, the feature requires that both sides have an active data connection—either cellular data or Wi-Fi.
If you are messaging another iPhone user, the system will automatically fall back to iMessage, not RCS. RCS only activates when the other person is using a device that does not support iMessage but does support the RCS Universal Profile.
Check Your Carrier and Region Support
RCS messaging on iPhone depends on carrier support. Not all carriers in all countries have enabled RCS for iPhone. If you cannot find the RCS toggle in your Settings, or if messages are still being sent as SMS or MMS, your carrier may not yet support the feature. Contact your carrier to confirm whether RCS is available on your plan and in your region.

How to Enable RCS on iPhone

If it is already on, try toggling it off, waiting a few seconds, and turning it back on. This refreshes the connection to the RCS server.
After enabling RCS, open the Messages app and send a message to someone who uses an Android phone with RCS enabled. The text input area should show “RCS” instead of “SMS” or “Text Message” when the connection is active.
Restart Your iPhone
A simple restart can resolve many temporary connectivity issues. Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait about 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button again until the Apple logo appears. After the phone restarts, test RCS messaging again.
Check Your Data Connection
RCS requires an active internet connection. If you are on a weak Wi-Fi signal or have disabled cellular data, RCS may fail and messages will be sent as SMS instead. Open Control Center and confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data is turned on. If you are using cellular data, make sure you have not accidentally restricted Messages from using it.
Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and scroll down to the list of apps. Make sure Messages is set to On. If you are unsure, try toggling Airplane Mode on and off to force the phone to reconnect to the network.
Update Your Carrier Settings
Carriers sometimes release updates that improve compatibility with services like RCS. Your iPhone may not always prompt you to install these updates. To check manually, connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, you will see a prompt to update carrier settings. Follow the on-screen instructions. This does not affect your personal data or settings.
Reset Network Settings
If RCS messaging still does not work after the steps above, resetting your network settings can clear out misconfigured network preferences. This will remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN settings. It does not delete your photos, messages, or other personal data.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Enter your passcode and confirm. The phone will restart. After it comes back on, reconnect to Wi-Fi and test RCS again.
Update iOS
Apple has released several iOS updates since the initial introduction of RCS support. If you are running an older version of iOS, installing the latest available update may resolve bugs that affect RCS functionality. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is listed, tap Download and Install. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has sufficient battery charge before starting the update.
If the Problem Continues
After trying all the steps above, if RCS messaging is still not working, the issue may be on the recipient’s side. Ask the other person to check whether RCS is enabled on their device and whether their carrier supports it. If you have confirmed that both sides meet the requirements and the problem persists, contact your carrier’s support team. They can check whether RCS is provisioned correctly on your line and whether there are any network-level restrictions affecting the service.
