How to use Precision Finding for AirTag on iPhone

What You Need Before You Start

Precision Finding is a feature that uses the Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip in your iPhone to guide you directly to a nearby AirTag. It combines visual, audible, and haptic feedback to show both the direction and approximate distance to the item, making it much more precise than a standard Bluetooth signal.

Before you try to use Precision Finding, make sure you have the following:

An iPhone model with a U1 or U2 chip. These chips are found in iPhone 11 and later models (excluding the iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation). Precision Finding does not work on older iPhones or iPads.
An AirTag. The AirTag must be paired with your Apple ID and within Bluetooth range of your iPhone.
Bluetooth and Location Services turned on. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure it is enabled. Also ensure that Bluetooth is on in Settings > Bluetooth.

How to Use Precision Finding for an AirTag

Follow these steps to locate your AirTag with Precision Finding:

Open the Find My app. Tap the icon on your home screen or search for it in your app library.
Go to the Items tab. At the bottom of the screen, tap “Items.” You will see a list of all AirTags and other Find My network accessories linked to your Apple ID.
Select the AirTag you want to find. Tap the AirTag’s name from the list. The app will show a map with its last known location.
Tap “Find” or “Find Near.” When the AirTag is within Bluetooth range (typically around 30–50 feet), a button labeled “Find” or “Find Near” will appear near the map. Tap it to start Precision Finding.
Move your iPhone around. The screen will display an arrow pointing in the direction of the AirTag and a distance estimate. The background color of the distance indicator will change from light green to a darker green as you get closer. Continue moving while keeping your phone steady. The arrow updates as you move relative to the tag.
Watch for the final distance indicator. When you are within about 3 to 5 feet of the AirTag, the distance reading will become very small, and you may feel a series of haptic taps. The arrow may disappear, replaced by a “tap” notification that you are very close. At this point, slow down and look carefully in the immediate area.
Use the on-screen crosshair (optional). In some recent versions of iOS, when you are very close, a crosshair appears on the screen. Center the crosshair on the AirTag’s estimated position to narrow down its exact location. This is particularly helpful when the tag is hidden in a bag or under clutter.

What to Expect During Precision Finding

Precision Finding relies on line-of-sight for its most accurate results. Thick walls, metal objects, or large furniture can block the UWB signal and make the arrow less reliable. If the signal is disrupted, the app will show a message that the connection is weak and ask you to move closer or reposition yourself.

The distance shown is an approximation based on signal timing and the phone’s motion sensors. It is extremely accurate at close range but becomes less precise beyond 30 feet. The arrow always points to the estimated direction of the AirTag, not necessarily along a clear path. You may need to walk around furniture or walls to follow the arrow.

Alternative Method: Play a Sound

If Precision Finding is not available or the UWB signal is blocked, you can still use the Find My app to play a sound on the AirTag. This works over Bluetooth over a similar range.

Tap the AirTag in the Items tab, then tap “Play Sound.” The AirTag will begin chirping loudly. You can tap “Stop Sound” when you locate it. This method does not require the U1 or U2 chip and works on all iPhones and iPads that support the Find My app.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Precision Finding Button Does Not Appear

This usually means one of the requirements is not met. Double-check your iPhone model (must be iPhone 11 or later, excluding the SE). Confirm that Location Services and Precise Location are both enabled for the Find My app. If you have an iPhone 16 or newer model, the U2 chip is present, but the same conditions apply. If the button still does not show, move closer to the AirTag. Precision Finding only activates within Bluetooth range.

Arrow Seems Inaccurate or Flips Direction

This is often caused by interference from metal objects or walls. Move to a more open area and try again. Also ensure your iPhone is not placed flat on a surface or covered by a thick case, as this can interfere with UWB signals. Hold the phone in a portrait orientation and keep it away from your body as much as possible.

Distance Reading Stays at “Near” or Does Not Update

If you are within range but the distance number does not decrease, try walking a few steps in one direction to re-establish a fresh measurement. If that does not help, close the Find My app completely and reopen it. You can also toggle Bluetooth off and on in Settings > Bluetooth.

Haptic Feedback Not Working

Make sure your iPhone’s ringer and vibration settings are on. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and confirm that Haptics are enabled. Haptic feedback during Precision Finding is a core part of the experience and will not work if haptics are turned off.

AirTag Not Showing in Find My Items Tab

If the AirTag is not listed, it may not be paired with your Apple ID, or it may have been reset. Open the Find My app, tap “Items,” then tap “Add Item” to pair a new AirTag. Alternatively, go to the “Me” tab and check that you are signed in with the correct Apple ID.
