Why YouTube Shorts Might Not Load
When you open the YouTube app and the Shorts feed refuses to play, shows a spinning wheel, or displays an error message, the problem usually stems from a temporary data glitch, a cached error, or a network interruption. Because Shorts load as continuous short video segments, they are more sensitive to connection stutter than regular YouTube videos, which can buffer ahead. The following fixes address the most common causes, from the simplest to the most thorough.
Check Your Internet Connection First
Before changing any settings, confirm that your device has a working internet connection. Open a different app that requires data, such as a web browser or another streaming service. If nothing loads, the issue is your Wi‑Fi or mobile data, not YouTube.
If other services work but Shorts still do not load, try toggling Airplane Mode on and off. This forces your device to reconnect to the network and often clears a temporary routing problem. On most phones, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the Airplane Mode icon, wait five seconds, then tap it again to turn it off. After the device reconnects, reopen YouTube and try the Shorts tab again.
Close and Reopen the YouTube App
A hung process inside the app can prevent Shorts from loading. Fully close YouTube and restart it. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe the YouTube card off the screen. On most Android devices, open the recent apps view (the square or three‑line button) and swipe YouTube away. Wait a few seconds, then launch YouTube again.
If that does not help, force‑stopping the app is a more thorough version of the same fix. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Force Stop. On iPhone, the equivalent is offloading the app (Settings > General > iPhone Storage > YouTube > Offload App) and then reinstalling it from the App Store later. Force‑stopping clears any misbehaving background process without deleting your data.
Restart Your Device
A full restart clears temporary system errors that may interfere with app performance. Hold the power button (and the volume‑down button on some phones) until the power menu appears, then select Restart or Reboot. If your phone does not have a restart option, turn it off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. After the device boots up, test YouTube Shorts again.
Update the YouTube App
An outdated version of YouTube may contain bugs that affect the Shorts player. Check your app store for available updates:
- On Android: Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, select Manage apps & device, then tap Updates available. Find YouTube and tap Update.
- On iPhone: Open the App Store, tap your profile icon at the top, scroll down to see pending updates, and tap Update next to YouTube.
If an update is already installed, you can still try reinstalling the app as described in the previous section to ensure no files are corrupted.
Clear the YouTube App Cache (Android Only)
Corrupted cache data can prevent the Shorts feed from loading correctly. Clearing the cache removes temporary files without deleting your login information or watch history.
- Open your device’s Settings.
- Go to Apps (or Application Manager).
- Tap YouTube.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache (not Clear Data or Clear Storage).
After clearing the cache, restart YouTube. If you accidentally tap Clear Data, you will need to sign in again and reset your preferences, but your channel and subscriptions remain safe.
On iPhone, there is no direct cache‑clearing option for individual apps. Offloading the app (mentioned earlier) is the closest equivalent and will also remove cached files.
Check for System Updates
Rarely, a bug in the operating system itself can interfere with video playback. On Android, go to Settings > System > System update (the exact path varies by manufacturer) and install any available updates. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. After updating, restart your device and check if the issue is resolved.
Temporarily Disable VPN or Ad‑Blocking Apps
VPNs and ad blockers can interfere with the way YouTube fetches Shorts. If you use a VPN, try disconnecting it or switching to a different server location. If you use a system‑wide ad blocker or content filter, pause it briefly and test Shorts again. If Shorts load after disabling the service, the filtering app is the cause and you may need to adjust its settings or whitelist YouTube.
Check YouTube Server Status
Sometimes the problem is not on your end. YouTube’s servers occasionally experience outages that affect specific features like Shorts. You can check by visiting a site like Downdetector or checking social media for reports of widespread YouTube issues. If the service is down, no fix on your device will work. You will need to wait for YouTube to restore normal operation, which usually takes a few hours or less.
If the Problem Continues
After trying all the steps above, if Shorts still do not load, consider these advanced or less common causes:
- Date and time settings: Incorrect date, time, or time zone can cause YouTube’s authentication to fail. On most devices, setting the date and time to automatic (Settings > System
