Check Your Network First

Before you adjust any settings on your Xbox console, it is worth confirming where the slowdown is actually coming from. A slow download on Xbox is often caused by network congestion, a weak Wi-Fi signal, or a busy internet connection rather than a problem with the console itself.

Start by running a network test on your Xbox. Go to Settings > General > Network settings > Test network speed & statistics. This will show your current download speed, upload speed, and latency. Compare the result to the speed you are paying for from your internet provider. If the console shows a much lower number, the issue is likely your network, not the Xbox.

Also check whether other devices are using a lot of bandwidth. Streaming video, video calls, and large file downloads on other computers or phones can all reduce the speed available to your Xbox. Pausing those activities during a game download can make a noticeable difference.

1. Switch to a Wired Connection

Wi-Fi is convenient, but it is rarely as fast or as stable as a wired Ethernet connection. If your Xbox is currently connected wirelessly and you are seeing slow downloads, connecting it directly to your router with an Ethernet cable is the single most effective fix.

Eliminates signal interference. Wi-Fi signals can be weakened by walls, floors, household appliances, and even neighboring networks. A wired connection avoids all of that interference and provides a direct, stable path to your router.

Reduces latency. Even if your Wi-Fi speed looks adequate, higher latency can make downloads feel slower and less consistent. Ethernet typically provides lower latency and fewer dropped packets.

To set this up, simply connect one end of a standard Ethernet cable to the back of your Xbox and the other end to any available LAN port on your router. The console should automatically detect the wired connection. If you have a very long distance between the console and the router, a powerline adapter kit can be a useful alternative to running a long cable.

2. Close Games and Apps Running in the Background

An Xbox continues to run certain games and apps even when you are not actively using them. These background processes can consume system resources and network bandwidth, slowing down downloads.

Fully quit any game or app before starting a download. Do not just switch to the home screen. Highlight the game or app on the home screen, press the Menu button on your controller, and select Quit. Repeat this for every title you have open.

Restart the console if you are unsure. The cleanest way to ensure no background processes are interfering is to perform a full restart. Press and hold the Xbox button on your controller, select Restart console, and confirm. After the console reboots, start your download immediately before opening anything else.

3. Pause and Resume the Download

This fix sounds too simple, but it works for many users. The Xbox download manager can sometimes get stuck in a slow state, and forcing a reset of the download queue can restore higher speeds.

Go to My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue. Find the download that is moving slowly, highlight it, press the Menu button, and select Pause installation. Wait about ten to fifteen seconds, then press the Menu button again and select Resume installation.

This action forces the console to renegotiate the connection to the download server. In many cases, the download speed will jump back up to a faster rate immediately after the resume. You can repeat this once or twice if the speed does not improve, but there is no benefit to pausing and resuming repeatedly.

4. Change Your DNS Settings

Your Xbox uses a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate server addresses into numbers. The default DNS server provided by your internet service provider is not always the fastest. Switching to a third-party, public DNS server can sometimes improve download speeds and overall network responsiveness.

On your Xbox, go to Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings and change the selection from Automatic to Manual.

Two widely used and reliable public DNS servers are:

  • Google Public DNS: Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4
  • Cloudflare DNS: Primary 1.1.1.1, Secondary 1.0.0.1

Enter the primary DNS address in the first field and the secondary address in the second field, then save your settings. The Xbox will apply the change immediately. You do not need to restart the console for this to take effect, but running a new network test can confirm that the console is using the new DNS servers.

Note that DNS changes help most when the problem is slow name resolution, not when the actual bottleneck is your internet connection speed or network congestion. It is a low-risk change to try, and you can always revert to Automatic if you see no improvement.

5. Limit Background Downloads and Update on Other Devices

If your home network has multiple devices that frequently download updates, sync files, or stream video, your Xbox may be competing for a limited amount of bandwidth. This is especially common on connections with lower speeds or on older routers that cannot handle many simultaneous connections efficiently.

On your Xbox, you can set a limit for background downloads. Go to Settings > General > Network settings > Bandwidth usage. Here you can choose to limit background downloads to a lower priority. This setting tells the console not to use full speed for downloads that happen while you are using the console for something else, but it can also help keep the connection stable.

For a more direct approach, manually pause or turn off automatic updates and large downloads on other devices while you are actively downloading a game. Smart TVs, Windows computers, and smartphones all have automatic update settings that can be temporarily disabled or set to a schedule that does not conflict with your gaming time.

If you have a modern router, you may also have access to Quality of Service (QoS) settings. Enabling QoS and prioritizing your Xbox’s traffic can ensure that the console gets the bandwidth it needs, even when other devices are active. This setting is usually found in the router’s configuration page, not on the Xbox itself.

When to Look Beyond These Fixes

If you have tried all five of these fixes and your Xbox downloads are still consistently slow, the problem may be outside your control. Your internet service plan may have a speed cap that is lower than expected, or your area may be experiencing network congestion during peak hours. Check your plan details and run a speed test on a wired computer to see what your actual internet speed is.

Also consider the health of your router. Older routers, especially those that are several years old, may not be able to handle the high throughput required for modern game downloads. If your router is outdated, replacing it with a newer model that supports Wi-Fi 6 or has faster Ethernet ports can improve overall network performance.

Finally, verify that there are no active service outages related to Xbox Live or the specific game server you are downloading from. Microsoft’s status page and community forums are good places to check for widespread issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a wired connection always improve download speed?

Not always, but it usually provides a more stable and consistent connection. If your Wi-Fi signal is already strong and your router is nearby, the difference may be small. However, in most real-world home environments, Ethernet reduces interference and packet loss, which helps maintain higher speeds over time.

Can too many saved games or add-ons slow down downloads?

No. Saved games and add-ons take up storage space, but they do not affect download speed. The download speed is determined by your network connection, the server load, and the console’s current settings. Storage space only matters if you run out of room, in which case the download will pause until you free up space.

Will restarting my router help with slow Xbox downloads?

Yes, it can. Routers can accumulate small errors in their memory or connection tables over time. A full restart clears those temporary issues. Unplug the router’s power cable, wait about 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow a few minutes for the router to fully restart, then test the Xbox download again.

Does the Xbox’s power mode affect download speed?

Yes. If your Xbox is set to Energy-saving mode, it may limit background activity when the console is turned off or idle. If you want downloads to continue at full speed while you are not using the console, select Sleep mode (Instant-on) in the Power mode & startup settings. Keep in mind that Sleep mode uses more electricity than Energy-saving mode.
