First, Check the Basics

When an eSIM stops working on an iPhone, the problem usually comes from one of a few common sources: a carrier activation issue, an incomplete setup, a network settings glitch, or a software conflict. Before trying any fix, confirm a few simple things first.

Make sure your iPhone model supports eSIM. All iPhone models from the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR onward support eSIM, including every generation since. If you are using an iPhone purchased in mainland China, some models lack eSIM support. Hong Kong and Macau models may vary by generation.

Verify that your carrier supports eSIM for your specific plan. Most major carriers worldwide now support eSIM, but some prepaid plans, business accounts, or smaller regional carriers may not. Check your carrier’s official eSIM support page or contact customer support.

Also confirm that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. An eSIM activation requires an internet connection to download the profile. If you are setting up the eSIM during initial iPhone setup, you need a Wi-Fi connection.

Check Whether the Problem Is With Activation or With the Active eSIM

It helps to identify whether you are dealing with an activation failure or a problem with an already-active eSIM.

Activation failure: You tried to add a new eSIM plan, but the iPhone shows an error, the QR code does not scan, or the plan does not appear in Settings. In this case, you likely need to re-enter the details, obtain a new QR code from your carrier, or adjust your network connection.

eSIM not working after activation: The eSIM appears in Settings, but you cannot make calls, send messages, or use mobile data. This usually points to a carrier settings issue, a network settings glitch, or a misconfigured line selection.

Fix 1: Complete the eSIM Setup Properly

If the eSIM failed to activate during setup, you can retry the process.

  1. Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data on some iPhone models).

  2. Tap Add eSIM.

  3. Choose the method your carrier provided:

    • Use QR Code: Scan the QR code your carrier gave you. Hold the camera steady and ensure the entire code is visible within the frame. If scanning fails, tap Enter Details Manually and type the information from your carrier.
    • Carrier App: If your carrier offers an app, open it and follow the instructions to download the eSIM profile directly to your iPhone.
    • Carrier Activation: Some carriers allow you to activate an eSIM by logging into your account and selecting your iPhone. The profile is then sent over the air.

  4. After the profile is downloaded, your iPhone may ask you to label the plan (for example, “Personal” or “Business”). Choose a label that helps you identify which line is which.

  5. If you are setting up a second line, choose which line will be your default for voice, messages, and data. You can change these settings later.

If the activation still fails, ask your carrier to provide a new QR code or eSIM profile. The original code may have expired or been used too many times.

Fix 2: Turn the Cellular Line Off and Back On

A quick toggle can refresh the connection between your iPhone and the carrier network without deleting anything.

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.

  2. Tap the eSIM plan that is not working.

  3. Toggle Turn On This Line off. Wait about 10 seconds.

  4. Toggle it back on.

Wait a minute for the iPhone to reconnect to the network. If the eSIM starts working, the issue was a temporary registration glitch with the carrier.

Fix 3: Update Carrier Settings

Carriers periodically release small updates that improve network compatibility and fix activation issues. These updates install automatically when connected to Wi-Fi, but you can check manually.

  1. Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.

  2. Open Settings > General > About.

  3. Stay on the About screen for 10–15 seconds. If a carrier settings update is available, a pop-up will appear asking you to tap Update.

  4. Tap Update if prompted. Your iPhone does not need to restart, but your network connection may drop briefly.

If no pop-up appears, no update is available. You can also check the carrier version number listed next to Carrier on that screen. If you have recently changed carriers or plans, an outdated carrier settings version could cause activation problems.

Fix 4: Reset Network Settings

This fix clears saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, VPN configurations, and cellular settings. It does not delete your apps, photos, or personal data. It is the most thorough non-destructive troubleshooting step for eSIM issues.

Important: After resetting network settings, you will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair Bluetooth devices. Make sure you know your Wi-Fi passwords before proceeding.

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.

  2. Tap Reset at the bottom.

  3. Choose Reset Network Settings.

  4. Enter your iPhone passcode and confirm.

Your iPhone will restart. After it turns back on, go to Settings > Cellular and check whether the eSIM is present and active. You may need to re-select which line is used for data and which is the default voice line.

Resetting network settings often resolves issues where the eSIM profile is correctly installed but the iPhone cannot register on the network.

Fix 5: Remove and Re-add the eSIM

If none of the above fixes work, removing the eSIM profile and adding it again can solve deeply stuck activation errors. This is more involved than toggling the line off and on because it deletes the profile from your iPhone.

Important: Removing an eSIM may prevent you from reactivating the same profile. Some carriers limit the number of times you can download the same eSIM. Before removing it, confirm with your carrier that you can re-activate the eSIM or get a new QR code if needed.

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.

  2. Tap the eSIM plan you want to remove.

  3. Scroll down and tap Remove eSIM. Confirm the removal.

  4. After removal, restart your iPhone.

  5. Go back to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and follow the setup process again using the QR code, carrier app, or carrier activation method.

If the activation fails again after re-adding the eSIM, the problem is most likely with your carrier account or the specific eSIM profile they issued. Contact your carrier’s support and explain that the eSIM profile does not activate on your iPhone even after removal and re-addition.

If the Problem Continues

Some eSIM issues have causes that cannot be fixed from your iPhone alone.

Contact your carrier if:

  • The eSIM appears in Settings but shows “No Service” or “SOS Only” after trying all fixes.
  • Your carrier reports that the eSIM is active on their end, but your iPhone still cannot connect.
  • You receive an error message stating that the eSIM is not supported or that activation failed due to an account issue.
  • Your plan was recently changed, ported, or suspended.

Update iOS: Occasionally, an iOS update includes fixes for cellular connectivity issues. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update. This is a safe step that does not remove your eSIM or other data.

Check for physical damage: While eSIM does not rely on a physical SIM card slot, the iPhone’s cellular modem and antennas are still physical components. If you have recently dropped your iPhone in water or suffered a hard impact, hardware damage could prevent the eSIM from working. In that case, an Apple Store or authorized service provider can run diagnostics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my eSIM if I reset my iPhone?

A standard reset of network settings does not delete the eSIM profile. However, erasing all content and settings (a factory reset) removes the eSIM. Always back up your iPhone before performing a full reset.

Can I have two eSIMs active at once on an iPhone?

Yes. iPhone models from the iPhone XS onward support two active eSIMs simultaneously, or one physical SIM and one eSIM. Some newer models support two active eSIMs without a physical SIM. You can have multiple eSIM profiles stored, but only two lines can be active at the same time.

Why does my eSIM say “Activation Required” on the lock screen?

This message usually appears when the eSIM profile has been downloaded but the activation process has not completed. Connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > Cellular to check whether the plan needs additional steps, such as confirming the plan label or selecting a default line.

Do I need to scan the QR code again after resetting network settings?

No. Resetting network settings does not delete the eSIM profile, so you do not need to re-scan the QR code. The eSIM remains installed, but you may need to re-select your preferred line for data and calls.
