Why Your iPhone Is Not Receiving Verification Codes

Verification codes are short, time-sensitive passcodes sent via SMS, phone call, or through Apple’s own delivery methods to confirm your identity when signing into accounts or making changes to your Apple ID. When these codes stop arriving, every login attempt can become a dead end.
The problem usually falls into one of four categories: a network or carrier issue, incorrect phone settings, Apple ID or iMessage configuration problems, or a problem on the sender’s side. Because the causes vary widely, the fastest approach is to run through a few diagnostic steps before making any changes to your phone.

Check What Is Causing the Problem

Before you change any settings, take a moment to narrow down where the failure is happening.
First, determine whether you are missing all verification codes or only codes from one specific service. If you receive codes from some apps and services but not others, the issue likely lies with the sender or with how that particular service delivers codes, not with your iPhone.
Second, check whether you are expecting an SMS text message, a phone call, or a code delivered through a different channel. Some services give you a choice between text message and voice call. If the text never arrives, request a voice call instead to see if that works.
Third, verify that you have a cellular signal. Verification codes sent by SMS require an active connection to your carrier’s network. If you are in an area with poor coverage, codes may be delayed or sent repeatedly to the carrier’s network without reaching your phone.

Fixes to Try in Order

Work through these fixes from the simplest to the most involved. After each step, request a new verification code and test again.

1. Restart Your iPhone

A simple restart clears temporary software glitches, resets network connections, and refreshes background services that handle incoming messages. Turn your iPhone off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This costs nothing and resolves a surprising number of messaging issues.

2. Check Your Cellular Connection and Data

SMS delivery depends on your carrier network. Open Control Center and verify that you have at least one or two bars of signal. If you are in a low-coverage area, move to a window or step outside.
Also, check that your iPhone is not stuck in Airplane Mode. If Airplane Mode is on, tap the airplane icon to disable it.
If you have poor cellular reception but a strong Wi-Fi connection, you can try enabling Wi-Fi Calling. This feature routes calls and SMS messages through your internet connection instead of relying solely on the cellular network. To turn it on, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and enable it. Note that this option may not appear unless your carrier supports it.

3. Turn Off Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes

If your iPhone is in Do Not Disturb, a Focus mode, or if notifications are silenced, verification code messages may arrive but produce no visible alert. You might never notice the message sitting quietly in your inbox.
Check the Control Center to see if any Focus mode is active. Swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen and look at the Focus button. If it shows an active mode, tap it to turn it off.
Even with Focus mode off, it is worth confirming that Messages notifications are enabled for the specific app that should deliver the code. Go to Settings > Notifications > Messages and verify that Allow Notifications is on.

4. Verify That SMS and iMessage Are Working

When a service sends a verification code to your phone number, the message may arrive through either SMS or iMessage depending on how the sender routes it. Apple’s iMessage system can interfere with SMS delivery in some cases, especially if your iPhone tries to send the message as an iMessage and the sender’s system is not properly configured.
A common fix is to toggle iMessage off and on. Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage. Wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This forces your iPhone to re-register with Apple’s messaging servers.
While you are in Messages settings, confirm that Send & Receive shows your correct phone number and Apple ID. If your number is not listed, your iPhone may not be properly linked to SMS delivery for that account.

5. Check Your Phone Number and Carrier Settings

Occasionally, a carrier settings update can fix SMS routing problems. Go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
Also, make sure your phone number is correctly associated with your Apple ID and with any account that is sending the verification code. If the service is trying to reach an old number or a number that is no longer active, you will never receive the code. Check the account’s security or profile settings to confirm which phone number is on file.

6. Check Blocked Contacts and Spam Filters

If the sender’s number or the service’s short code is blocked on your iPhone, the message will never surface. Go to Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts and review the list. If the number appears there, swipe left on it and tap Unblock.
Some carriers also apply spam filtering to short codes or automated messages. If you suspect this, contact your carrier and ask whether SMS messages from short codes or automated systems are being filtered. Carriers sometimes block these messages by default or as part of a spam-protection feature that can be disabled.

7. Reset Network Settings

If none of the above steps help, resetting network settings can clear deeper connection problems. This action removes saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and cellular settings, so you will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Your iPhone will restart. After it finishes restarting, rejoin your Wi-Fi network and try requesting a new verification code.

8. Check Whether the Sender Is Blocking Delivery

If you have confirmed that your phone is receiving other SMS messages normally and your number is correct on the account, the problem may be on the sender’s side. Some online services have safeguards that temporarily stop sending verification codes after repeated failed attempts. Others may route codes only through specific channels, such as a voice call or an authenticator app, and you may have selected the wrong delivery method.
If you have requested multiple codes in a short period, wait 15 to 30 minutes and try again. Also, check whether the service allows delivery through an alternative method, such as a phone call or a code sent to a secondary email address.

When the Problem Involves Apple ID Codes Specifically

If you are not receiving Apple ID verification codes, the troubleshooting path is slightly different. Apple can deliver these codes through SMS, trusted devices, or account recovery methods.
If you have another Apple device signed in with the same Apple ID, the code may be delivered to that device instead of your iPhone. Check all your devices for a notification with the code. You can also go to Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security and review which phone numbers are listed as trusted numbers. If your current number is not listed, add it or make it the primary trusted number.
If you have two-factor authentication enabled and are not receiving the code on any trusted device, you may need to use account recovery. Apple typically requires you to wait for a system-generated verification process, which can take time. The exact recovery process depends on your account’s security settings and whether you have set up a recovery contact or recovery key.

If the Problem Continues

After working through these steps, if verification codes still do not arrive, the issue may require help from outside your iPhone.
Contact your carrier: Ask them to check whether SMS short-code messages are blocked on your line, whether there is any network issue affecting your number, and whether your line can receive messages from automated systems.
Contact the service sending the code: Reach out to the support team for the account you are trying to access. Explain that your phone number is correct, that you can receive other SMS messages, and that you have tried requesting delivery through alternative methods. They may manually verify your identity or add your number to an allowlist.
Contact Apple Support: If the codes are for your Apple ID, Apple Support can help verify your identity and restore access. Be prepared to answer security questions or provide proof of ownership, but do not share your password or verification codes with anyone claiming to be support.

Final Thoughts

The fastest path to a fix is almost always the simplest one: restart your iPhone, turn off Focus modes, and check that you have a working cellular signal. If those steps fail, move on to toggling iMessage, reviewing blocked contacts, and resetting network settings. Most verification code delivery problems stem from local settings or temporary carrier issues rather than permanent failures. Only in rare cases will the problem require help from your carrier or the sending service itself.
