Why Calls Drop With a Full Signal

A full signal bar on your phone does not guarantee a stable call. The signal strength indicator measures the power of the radio signal between your phone and the nearest cell tower, but call quality depends on more than raw signal power. Dropped calls when the signal appears strong are usually caused by network congestion, software glitches, faulty network settings, or issues with how your phone handles the transition between towers. The following steps address the most common causes in a logical order so you can pinpoint and fix the problem without unnecessary changes.

Check What Is Causing the Problem

Before changing any settings, try to identify the pattern of the dropped calls. Note whether calls drop in specific locations, at certain times of day, or when you are moving. Also check if the problem occurs with one contact or with all callers. This basic observation helps narrow the cause.

Possible causes include:

  • Network congestion – during peak hours, the tower may be overloaded even if the signal is excellent.
  • VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling issues – if these features are enabled but unstable, calls may disconnect.
  • Faulty network settings – incorrect APN, preferred network type, or data roaming settings can interfere with voice calls.
  • SIM card problems – a damaged or loosely inserted SIM card can cause intermittent disconnects.
  • Software bugs – a recent update or an app that manages calls may introduce glitches.
  • Carrier-side problems – tower maintenance, outages, or account restrictions can cause drops.
  • Voice over NR (5G calling) instability – if your phone and carrier support voice over 5G, that connection may be less stable than VoLTE in some areas.

Once you have a sense of the pattern, proceed with the fixes below in the order shown.

Fixes to Try in Order

1. Restart Your Phone

A simple restart clears temporary software glitches that can interfere with the modem and radio stack. This is the safest first step. After the phone restarts, make a test call. If the problem persists, move to the next step.

2. Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn on Airplane Mode, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it off. This forces your phone to disconnect from the mobile network and reconnect fresh, which often resolves temporary registration or authentication issues with the tower.

3. Check and Update Carrier Settings

Carrier settings updates are small configuration files that your network operator pushes to optimize call handling, VoLTE, and other services.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, you will see a prompt to update carrier settings. No confirmation message means your settings are current.

On Android: Carrier settings usually update automatically, but you can check by going to Settings > About phone > Status > SIM status (menu names vary by manufacturer). Some devices offer a manual update option under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Carrier settings.

4. Disable VoLTE Temporarily

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) allows calls over the 4G network. Although it usually improves call quality, it can cause drops if the LTE signal is actually fluctuating or if the carrier’s VoLTE implementation is not fully stable in your area.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Select LTE without VoLTE (if the option appears) or switch to 4G to disable VoLTE. On some carrier versions, you cannot disable VoLTE on iPhone without contacting the carrier.

On Android: Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks. Look for VoLTE calls or Enhanced 4G LTE Mode and toggle it off. If the option is missing, it may be hidden by the carrier or manufacturer.

Make a test call. If the drops stop, you have identified the cause. You can leave VoLTE off or re-enable it later to see if a software update resolves the issue.

5. Turn Off Wi-Fi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling hands off calls between Wi-Fi and the cellular network. If your home Wi-Fi is unreliable or if the handoff between Wi-Fi and mobile data is poor, calls can drop.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling and toggle it off.

On Android: Go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling and disable it.

Test a call after disabling. If the drops stop, your Wi-Fi network or the handoff procedure is the problem.

6. Reset Network Settings

This step erases saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and cellular settings including APN configurations. It does not delete personal data like photos or contacts.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

On Android: Go to Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset network settings (menu name may vary by brand). You may need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords and set the preferred network type again after the reset.

After the reset, your phone will reconnect to the mobile network with default carrier settings. Make a test call.

7. Remove and Reinsert the SIM Card

A loose or oxidized SIM contact can cause intermittent disconnections even when the phone shows full signal because the modem may still detect the network but lose the authentication session.

Power off your phone. Use the SIM eject tool to remove the SIM tray. Inspect the SIM card for visible damage or dirt. Wipe the gold contacts gently with a dry, lint-free cloth. Reinsert the SIM firmly, making sure it sits flat. Power on and test.

8. Switch Network Mode to 4G (LTE) Only

If your phone is set to 5G, it may constantly search for a 5G signal or try to hand calls over between 5G and 4G, causing drops. Forcing your phone to use LTE only can stabilize calls.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Select LTE. If you have a 5G iPhone, you may also need to disable 5G Auto by selecting LTE directly.

On Android: Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Choose LTE/4G or LTE only from the list. If the exact option is unavailable, select the mode that does not include 5G.

Test calls over a few days. If the drops disappear, your 5G coverage or handover mechanism was the culprit.

9. Check for Software Updates

Manufacturers and carriers often release updates that include modem firmware improvements and fixes for call-handling bugs.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

On Android: Go to Settings > Software Update > Download and Install (menu name varies by brand).

Install any available update. After the update, reboot and test.

10. Contact Your Carrier

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the problem is likely on the carrier side. Network outages, tower maintenance, account provisioning errors, or settings that only the carrier can change may be causing the drops.

When you call your carrier, provide:

  • the exact times and locations of the dropped calls;
  • the phone model and software version;
  • whether the problem occurs with VoLTE enabled or disabled;
  • your SIM card ICCID (found in Settings > About phone > Status on Android, or Settings > General > About on iPhone).

The carrier may refresh your network registration, reprovision your account, or send you a new SIM card if yours is faulty.

If the Problem Continues

If the drops persist after working through all the steps above, consider these possibilities:

  • Other phones on the same network in the same location drop calls too – this confirms a local network issue that only the carrier can fix.
  • Only your phone drops calls in the same location where other phones work fine – the problem is likely hardware-related. Back up your data and try a factory reset (after backing up) before seeking hardware repair. A factory reset will erase all data and settings, then reinstall the operating system fresh.
  • The phone has physical damage or water exposure – the internal antenna connections or modem may be compromised. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.

In rare cases, a specific app that manages calls or spam filtering may interfere. Test in safe mode (instructions vary by device). If the drops stop in safe mode, a third-party app is the cause. Uninstall recently added apps one by one until the problem goes away.

Conclusion

A full signal bar does not guarantee a stable call because call stability depends on network configuration, software behavior, and the quality of the connection methods (VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, 5G handover). Start with the simplest fixes—restarting, toggling Airplane Mode, and checking carrier settings—then move to disabling VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling, resetting network settings, and forcing LTE mode. If the problem remains, contact your carrier with specific details about the drop pattern. Only after all software and network troubleshooting fails should you consider a factory reset or hardware repair. In most cases, one of the configuration changes listed above will restore reliable call quality.
