Why Your WhatsApp Backup Gets Stuck

A WhatsApp backup that will not finish is a common frustration. The process may hang at a certain percentage, stop responding for hours, or fail without a clear error message. Before you reset anything or reinstall the app, it helps to understand what is happening.

WhatsApp backups to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) require a stable internet connection, sufficient cloud storage, and enough device resources to compress and upload the data. When any of these conditions are not met, the backup gets stuck. The app does not always show a useful warning, so you need to check each potential cause yourself.

Check What Is Causing the Problem

You can narrow down the issue before trying any fixes. Open WhatsApp and go to the backup settings to see the current status.

On Android:
Open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Here you will see the last backup date and the backup size. If the backup is in progress, the status will show “Backing up…” with a percentage. Note whether it is moving at all or stuck at the same number for a long time.

On iPhone:
Open WhatsApp, tap Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. You will see the last backup date and the backup size. A progress indicator will appear during an active backup.

Check these external factors first:

  • Wi-Fi connection: The backup will not proceed over a weak or unreliable Wi-Fi network. Try moving closer to the router or switching to a different network.
  • Cloud storage space: Your Google Drive or iCloud account may be full. Check the available space in the respective service.
  • Phone storage: WhatsApp temporarily needs free space on your device to compress the backup file. If your phone storage is nearly full, the backup may stall.
  • Battery and power saver: Power-saving modes or low battery levels can prevent background processes like backups from completing. Plug the phone into a charger and disable battery saver temporarily.
  • App version: An outdated WhatsApp version can cause compatibility issues with the backup service. Check for app updates in the Play Store or App Store.

If none of these are obviously wrong, the problem is likely related to the connection between WhatsApp and the cloud service, or a data corruption issue in the backup file itself.

Fixes to Try in Order

Try these solutions one at a time, checking whether the backup completes after each step. Do not skip the simpler ones.

1. Restart Your Phone and Router

This clears temporary network glitches and frees up system resources. Restart the phone first, then restart the router by unplugging it for about 30 seconds. Reconnect the phone to Wi-Fi and try the backup again from the chat backup settings.

2. Force Stop WhatsApp and Retry

A stuck backup process may still be running in the background even if it appears frozen.

On Android: Go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Force Stop. Then open WhatsApp again, go to chat backup, and tap Back Up.

On iPhone: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-click the Home button) to open the app switcher. Swipe WhatsApp off the screen to close it fully. Then reopen WhatsApp and restart the backup.

3. Toggle Cloud Account Access

WhatsApp may have lost proper authorization to access your cloud storage.

On Android (Google Drive): Go to Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account. Tap Security, then scroll to Third-party apps with account access. Find WhatsApp and remove its access. Then go back to WhatsApp chat backup and tap Back Up. WhatsApp will prompt you to sign in to Google Drive again. This refreshes the authorization.

On iPhone (iCloud): Go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups. Check whether WhatsApp appears in the list. If it does, you can delete the old backup from here. Then go back to WhatsApp chat backup and tap Back Up Now. You will be asked to allow iCloud access again.

4. Delete the Existing Backup File

If the backup file itself is corrupted, the process will never finish. Deleting it forces WhatsApp to create a fresh backup from scratch. This will only affect the backup stored in the cloud, not your local chats.

On Android: Open Google Drive. Tap the menu (three lines), go to Backups. Find the WhatsApp backup (it is usually named after your phone number). Tap the three dots next to it and select Delete backup. Confirm the deletion. Then go back to WhatsApp and start a new backup.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups. Tap the backup that includes WhatsApp, then scroll down and tap Delete Backup. Confirm. Then return to WhatsApp and start a fresh backup.

5. Switch Between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data Temporarily

Some Wi-Fi networks have firewall settings or bandwidth limitations that interfere with large uploads. If you have mobile data available, try starting the backup over cellular data (be aware of your data cap).

On Android: In WhatsApp chat backup, tap Back Up Over and temporarily select Wi-Fi or mobile data.

On iPhone: WhatsApp backup over iCloud requires Wi-Fi by default. If you need to try cellular data, go to Settings > Cellular > iCloud Drive and enable it. Then try the backup again.

6. Clear Local Backup Files (Android Only)

WhatsApp stores local backup files on your phone. If these files are corrupted or too large, the Google Drive backup may stall.

Use a file manager app to navigate to Internal Storage > WhatsApp > Databases (or Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Databases on newer Android versions). You will see files named like msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14. Do not delete the most recent one. Delete only older files (except the latest msgstore.db.crypt14 and the most recent dated backup). Then go back to WhatsApp and try the backup again.

7. Reinstall WhatsApp

This is a last resort. Before uninstalling, make sure you have a recent local backup file (the one you kept in the Databases folder). Uninstall WhatsApp, restart the phone, then install the app again from the Play Store or App Store. Verify your phone number. WhatsApp should find the local backup and offer to restore it. After restoration, try the cloud backup again.

If the Problem Continues

If none of these steps work, the issue may be on the server side or related to your Google or Apple account:

  • Check service status: Google Drive and iCloud can experience temporary outages. Look for status pages or social media posts from the service provider.
  • Contact WhatsApp support: Use the in-app help feature (Settings > Help > Contact Us) to report the issue. Include the backup size, your phone model, and which steps you have already tried.
  • Consider an end-to-end encrypted backup: WhatsApp offers an option to encrypt your backup with a password or 64-bit key before uploading. Enabling this can sometimes resolve upload issues by changing how the data is packaged. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and turn it on, then start a new backup.

If you do not absolutely need a cloud backup, you can continue using WhatsApp normally without one. Your chats remain on the phone. Just keep in mind that you will lose them if the phone is lost, damaged, or reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a WhatsApp backup normally take?

A typical backup can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the amount of chat data, media files, and your internet upload speed. If the progress bar does not move for 30 minutes or more, something is likely wrong.

Will deleting the old backup delete my chats?

No. Deleting the backup file from Google Drive or iCloud only removes the cloud copy. Your chats remain on the phone. A new backup will start from your current messages.

Can a large video file cause the backup to get stuck?

Yes. Very large video files (longer than several minutes) can slow down or stall the compression and upload process. If you suspect a specific media file is causing the issue, try excluding videos from the backup in WhatsApp chat backup settings, then attempt the backup again.
